Affirmative

  • Observation 1 — Pandemic Threat — infectious disease (HIV/flu framing) spreads rapidly; raising threat level key to national/international response
  • Bioethics contention — Contagion as negative externality — no individual internalizes cost of spreading disease; Widows 13 evidence; justifies intervention even if paternalism concerns exist elsewhere
  • Relational subjectivity framework — individuals constituted relationally (social factors); ethical obligation to mitigate health inequalities; rejects liberal individualism; single-payer as communal social good
  • Plan — USFG establishes single-payer system; providers paid by government
  • Solvency — Mortality/financial security — Gruber 14; covers gaps, reduces deaths, eliminates financial barriers to care
  • Solvency — Prevention/detection — centralizes resources; Canen 14; removes financial/procedural barriers so patients more likely to report illness
  • Solvency — Coalition building — iterative debates around single-payer build organizing capacity; grassroots left infrastructure; resists Trumpism; Brown/Table evidence
  • Solvency — Pandemic prevention — central planning enables preventive medicine and research; research propagates globally
