Select YouTube Start
A speech in the round workspace can come from a recording of the whole round instead of its own recording: a YouTube video, or an MP3 of the round such as the joined MP3 of every recorded speech. Each speech's ⋮ menu has Select YouTube Start right under Upload Speech Audio. It opens a modal for that speech.
- Where: live round workspace, speech timer menu
- Package:
debate-round(dialogs/YouTubeSpeechDialog.tsx,dialogs/SpeechStartLabeler.tsx,round/youtube-speech-client.ts),debate-timer(recorder/youtube-speech-segments.ts),debate-speech-writer(prompts/youtube-speech-timestamps.ts)
What it does
- Upload audio or pick a video. The "Upload audio" tab saves an audio
file as the speech's recording, the same as the menu item. The "YouTube
video" tab takes a pasted YouTube link (a
t=start is kept) or a search, which looks through the site's own video library. The "Round audio (MP3)" tab plays the round's joined MP3, when there is one, or any MP3 link. Both tabs label speeches the same way. - Preview and mark the speech. The video plays in the modal. Type a start and stop time, or press Set to to use where the video is now. Play clip plays just that stretch. Save keeps the clip for this speech.
- AI suggests every speech. Suggest all speeches with AI reads the video's captions, finds where words are spoken and where there is silence, and fits the format's speeches to them: all 12 in Policy, cross-examinations included, or the 7 in LD. Speech lengths come from the format but are allowed to vary, and prep time between speeches is expected. The AI then checks the captions for cues like a roadmap or "cross-ex" and adjusts. Pick a different format if the video isn't the round's format; picking a video from the library sets it for you. If you set a start point first, the suggestion starts there.
- Save them all. Each suggested row has Use to load it into the start and stop fields; Save all keeps a clip for every speech at once.
Good to know
- If the AI can't be reached, the suggestion is placed from the caption pauses alone. If the video has no captions, speeches are laid out by their lengths from your start point, so set one first.
- Clips are saved in this browser, beside the speech's recordings.
- Saving all speeches on a YouTube video also marks their starts on that video's watch page timeline, when the format's speech order there matches.
- An MP3 has no captions unless the round's recording provides them; without them, speeches are laid out by length from your start point.
